Imagining Chinese Cinemas in the 21st Century

Funded by a Leverhulme Trust International Network grant, the research project ‘Chinese Cinemas in the 21st Century: Production, Consumption, Imagination’ would like to invite academics and postgraduate students to a launch event and one day conference to be held at the University of Exeter from 9th to 10th July, 2012.
The project, led by Dr Song Hwee Lim <http://humanities.exeter.ac.uk/english/staff/lim/> (University of Exeter), seeks to examine the role of art and culture (in particular, film) as a form of ‘soft power’ capable of shaping both the region’s self-image and others’ perception of Chinese culture, which has varying impacts on local, national, regional and global levels. It will pay particular attention to aspects of production, consumption and imagination that have facilitated the transnational travel of Chinese films.
The network will be officially launched at 2 pm on Monday 9th July at the XFI Building at the Streatham Campus. We are delighted to announce that the Keynote Speaker for the launch is Professor Rey Chow (Duke University), whose talk is entitled OChina as Documentary in the Age of Hypermediality: Some Basic Questions’.
A one-day conference on the 10th July will focus on the role of imagination in the production and consumption of Chinese cinemas in the 21st century. It will feature 12 research papers, and will run from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Additionally, a one-day workshop will be held on the 11th July for postgraduates working on Chinese cinemas.

There is no registration fee, but please indicate if you would like to attend the conference dinner to be held on 9th July. We are unable to provide any funding for travel or accommodation.
