dGenerate Films Announces Exciting Partnership with Icarus Films
Big news here on the dGenerate front that we wanted to share with you. We’ve entered into a distribution partnership with Icarus Films, who have been releasing documentary and art films for nearly 30 years, and will be the exclusive distributor of dGenerate films moving forward. Karin, Kevin, Dan and myself are very excited for this opportunity for us to expand on our mission to expose as many people out there to the invaluable films and groundbreaking filmmakers we have the honor of distributing. Icarus will establish the dGenerate Films Collection, which will live within their catalog of 1000+ films and next to makers such as Chantal Akerman, Chris Marker, Patricio Guzman and many more. It’s quite an honor to be included in such fine company.
From here on out, Icarus will be taking over much of our operational responsibilities, including sales fulfillment and marketing. We are in the progress of migrating all of this to Icarus, so some of the ways you’ve engaged with us prior will be changing (and evolving!). We’ll make sure to keep you updated as we go via our blog. And lest you worry, we’ll still be on the hunt to acquire more of the films that put that put Chinese independent cinema on the radar screen of tastemakers like Icarus and yourselves.
Feel free to contact us with any questions, you should notice nothing but positive change as we’re able to tap into the expertise of Jonathan Miller and his team at Icarus. On behalf of all of the dGenerate team, present and past, thanks for helping dGenerate Films get here.

P.S. Read on for the press release on this announcement.
Jonathan Miller, President of Icarus Films, and Karin Chien, President of dGenerate Films, announced today that Icarus Films has acquired the exclusive distribution rights to dGenerate Films’ collection of award-winning, contemporary independent films from China.
In operation since 2008, dGenerate Films has established itself as the leading distributor of Chinese independent film in North America. Their catalog of auteur-driven work spans over 40 documentaries and fiction feature films, and reflects their mission to provide audiences with uncompromised views of China from Chinese independent filmmakers. dGenerate Films has helped introduce China’s current vanguard of digitally-driven filmmakers to audiences worldwide.
Icarus Films, established in 1978, is a leading distributor of documentary and art films in North America. With a catalog of more than 1000 titles, it distributes films ranging from the 350 titles in The Fanlight Collection dedicated to healthcare issues, to landmark creative documentaries by master filmmakers such as Chantal Akerman, Chris Marker, Patricio Guzmán, Heddy Honigmann, Marcel Ophuls, and Peter Watkins, and works by the artists Fischli and Weiss.
President and Founder of dGenerate Films Karin Chien said she has been “seeking the right partner to expand the reach and scope of the dGenerate Films collection, and allow us to continue our co-production and consulting activity. Working with Icarus Films, with their resources and deep distribution, marketing, and sales experience, together we’ll be able to achieve that goal. We’re thrilled and honored to be joining the Icarus Films family.”
President of Icarus Films Jonathan Miller added that he was particularly glad that with this partnership “dGenerate Films will continue to expand its relationships in China and help us bring the best of contemporary Chinese independent cinema to North America.”
The dGenerate collection will continue as a label distributed by Icarus Films. It is anticipated that at least five new films will be released each year. Fiction feature films will become a specialized label released by Icarus Films Home Video, while documentaries will be integrated with Icarus Films’ established non-theatrical channels and collections, where Icarus Films is already a leading distributor of documentary films from and about Asia. The new films will be released to all markets, from theatrical through television, non-theatrical, and home entertainment, including online.
