We’ve recently come across a number of announcements for university teaching positions in Chinese literature. As we have strong ties with the Chinese Studies academic community, we would like to share these opportunities with readers who may be interested:
The Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures and the Department of
Film and Media at UC Berkeley seek applications at the Assistant or
Associate Professor level (tenure track) in Chinese Film. Applicants
should have broad film competence, demonstrable either through formal
study or publication record, and be able to teach courses in film theory,
film history, and Chinese film and culture. Interest in New Media also a
plus. The department seeks candidates whose research, teaching, or
service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and
inclusion in higher education. Applications should consist of a cover
letter describing research and teaching interests, a curriculum vitae,
three letters of reference, and a writing sample of not more than 30 pp.

Brown University, Providence, RI 02912. The Department of East Asian
Studies seeks to employ a lecturer of Chinese language, on a three-year
renewable basis, effective July 1, 2012. M.A. degree in language
acquisition, Chinese language pedagogy or a related field is minimally
required. Native or near-native fluency in Chinese (Mandarin), and
competency in spoken and written English are required. Candidates should
have experience teaching Chinese language to English-speaking students at
the college level. Experience directing advanced Chinese language courses,
or developing language teaching materials for advanced courses are highly

The University of Oklahoma announces a position at the level of
Assistant Professor in Chinese Language and Culture or Theoretical
Linguistics. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in a relevant field, a
native or near-native command of both Mandarin and English, and a
demonstrable commitment to research and teaching. The successful
candidate will be expected to teach four courses per year. Courses
will include Chinese language and may include a course in the
candidate’s area of specialization. The position will be tenure-track.
Salary is competitive. The appointment will begin August 13, 2012.
Preliminary interviews will be held at the MLA convention in Seattle.

* a tertiary qualification in Chinese literature and language
* native or near-native fluency in Modern Standard Chinese and English
* demonstrated experience teaching Chinese language at university level
to students with and without previous exposure to the Chinese language
* experience teaching Chinese literature and language using computer
technology, multimedia and internet resources
* administrative and team work skills
* research publications in Chinese literature are highly desirable for
lectureship applicants and essential for senior lectureship applicants.
Shortlisted applicants will be asked to provide evidence of effective
teaching and teaching management to demonstrate their ability to
contribute to curriculum development and enhancement of Chinese
literature and a thirty-page sample of the applicant’s research writing
in English.
